hello,friday / ann kelle

{Each week I share things I’m thankful for in a column called “Hello, Friday.” Whether it’s a list, a story or a picture, always at the heart of it is thankfulness. Read more about it here or here.}

The above picture is a snapshot of where I’ve been all week. In front of my computer screen. Working on new designs. As I take a break from work, here are some things I’m especially thankful for this week.

1. spending Thanksgiving with my family
2. spontaneous road trips
3. that little cottage in the woods
4. a smile
5. all the “behind the scenes” people that contribute to getting fabric in yours and my hands
6. when I can’t put a book down because it’s just that good!
7. the thoughtful “mystery” person who secretly takes care of my lawn (I go outside to see the sidewalk swept or the monstrous piles of leaves gone.)
8. safe travels
9. peace
10. being able to take the picture above with only one hand . . . how did that happen?

my quilty bag for thanksgiving

November 21, 2012

six pocket bag / ann kelle

You see this bag in the picture above? I sewed it! A six pocket bag. Before you get too excited, I did not quilt the fabric. We had to bring pre-quilted fabric to class. I had mixed emotions about the pre-quilted fabric, but I was able to work in my Remix dot fabric. It’s not perfect and if you look close, you’ll see all sorts of mistakes. But, I’m happy that I completed it and didn’t walk out of class. The good thing is that this quilty bag comes at the perfect time. Just think how many leftovers I’ll be able to carry in this bag. Hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving full of happy times with your loved ones, and of course lots of  leftovers.

things that sparkle / ann kelle

{Each week I share things I’m thankful for in a column called “Hello, Friday.” Whether it’s a list, a story or a picture, always at the heart of it is thankfulness. Read more about it here or here.}

Every single day this week I ‘played’ with glitter or some other shimmery medium in one way or another. I’ve been experimenting with ways to add it to my designs. And it will also play a role in the redesign of my website/blog.  When I sat down to work on my post for today, I said a short prayer on what I should write about. I then continued designing and a bit later I was prompted to look into my blue craft boxes. And there it was . . . what I was fixated with all week and the thing that always puts a smile on my face. . . . sparkly glitter. I then sat there on the floor of my studio looking through my box and I started thinking about who created glitter. (I wanted to give him or her a hug). Well, it was down a rabbit hole from there . . . did you know they used mica flakes as glitter in ancient cave paintings? Anyhow. The glitter we’ve all known to use was actually an accidental discovery. Yep, an accident. So, this week, I’m thankful for not just glitter, but all those accidents that turn into something sparkly.

guess what I’ve been up to?

hot pad / ann kelle

Sewing. And lots of it. I started taking sewing classes a couple weeks ago. You may remember my sewing teacher moved. Then I moved. And then things got busy. But, I decided to start taking classes again. I had high hopes that my grandmother’s sewing gene was passed on to me, but sadly they’re still lying dormant.  I’m not completely hopeless, though. I did manage to make this little hot pad and some other things. And I’m still full of hope that any minute I’ll turn into a super great sewer. In anticipation of this, I even created  a long list of things I’d like to make. On top of that my Mama said she’d like me to sew her Christmas gift this year. Say what? I think my eyes popped out when she said that.

Some things I learned in class:
– a sewing machine that works properly is a requirement.
– rotary cutters are your friend. you need them to cut things straight.
– sewing with boring fabric isn’t as fun as sewing with fun fabric.
