I’m so happy to share with you my new fabric collection, “Beatbox.” The inspiration behind this line comes from my childhood. My Dad worked for a radio station for over 30 years. He started out spinning records but went on to do everything from managing a radio station to being a radio talk show personality. Needless to say, we grew up surrounded by music and developed an early appreciation of music. As children, my sister and I played “DJ”. We had a microphone and would make mix tapes, which would include us introducing the songs,  interviewing make-believe guests, reading the news and other silly antics. We also had a mini record player and a boom box, as well as a bunch of little musical instruments. I remember visiting the station (sometimes we got to be in the commercials!), going to concerts, etc. (The first concert I remember attending is Kool and the Gang when I was four.)  Music was a huge part of my childhood and I’m honored I get to share this through my artwork. “Beatbox” is being released this month. This line features boom boxes, cassette tapes, and headphones. It’s available in two fun color ways.

Above are some of the records from my sister and my collection. I still have the huge box of the records we played as a kid.

I love the story behind this collection! What a fun childhood…and Kool and the gang at four! WOW! I wish I could make out the names on your other records. I see “Don’t stop Believin'”. What are the others? I love the way old hits bring back such memories and so fun that you got to relive that all through this line!

Hi Kristin, Thank you! My mind was flooded with memories when I wrote this post. So many of my designs are inspired by my childhood. You have GOOD eyes! Yes, one of the records is Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey. It was crazy to see the records I had as a child . . . so many of the songs are my current favorites and I had forgotten I listened to them as a kid. The others are Lucky Star (Madonna), Stand Back (Stevie Nicks), and Purple Rain (Prince).

Do you have a version of this with “boyish” colors?
