tutorial: wall kite with pockets

Flying kites was always a treat for me when I was a kid. It was always a sweet surprise when my parents took my sister and I kite flying. I remember going to an open field and getting so very excited when my kite was finally in the air. Based on these childhood memories, I came up with the idea to design a wall kite made with my fabrics. This wall kite is not only pretty to look at, but also has pockets for storage. Perfect for storing little accessories. Amanda Hall was sweet enough to write a pattern, which you can find here. A complete list of the fabrics used in this kite are listed below.

Hi Debbie! Oops, there must have been something wrong with the file. I just updated the link. Try again and let me know if you are still experiencing problems.

I’m making the wall kite according to the tutorial but I”m running into pocket difficulties. The 4.5 inch squares are too big to smoothly piece onto the 3.5 inch squares to make the pockets. I’ve never tried to make pockets on anything (let alone a quilt) before, so I”m afraid I”m missing something. Can someone explain how I can work the pockets without trimming the fabric down to more closely match the 3.5-inch squares?

(I”m using your ladybug print fabric and some Remix ovals for a red, black and white kite for my daughter’s first grade teacher. If I can figure out the pockets, I think it’ll be adorable!)

      Hi Renee and Jen,

I checked with Amanda about the difficulties you’re having. After looking at the PDF and comparing them with her notes, we need to make a correction to the pattern. Instead of 4 1/2″ squares it should be 3 1/2″ x 4″ squares. That way when they are hemmed they will have a finished size of 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″. I am so sorry about this. I’ve updated the pattern. Please let me know if there are any other problems. My sincere apologies.

Renee . . the ladybug fabric with the Remix coordinates sound so cute! What a great teacher gift.

Thank you so much for replying! I have the kite part finished now and just need to stop procrastinating on the binding. I’m so pleased with how it’s turning out. I kind of want to make them for everyone I know. 🙂

I too am having difficulty with the instructions on the pockets. I’m halfway through the project, so of you could post some further instructions I’d much appreciate it!
