tutorial: child’s apron

August 05, 2013

A couple of months ago, I designed this children’s apron featuring Remix fabrics and Kona solid. It turned out quite cheerful! I hope will put a smile on your little person’s face. A special thanks to Amanda for writing this free tutorial. She actually had to rewrite the entire tutorial after her computer died . . . sending you a virtual high five, Amanda. Get the free tutorial here.  Please note: The tutorial was revised by Veronica Lovvorn of sewVery as of January 11, 2017.

The fabrics used in this apron are:
1. Remix dots in “red”
2. Remix flowers in “primary”
3. Kona solid in “corn yellow”

This apron is adorable! Thank you so much for sharing the tutorial! I was wondering what size child you think it fits.

  4. Morwhenna says:

Hi – thank you so much for this lovely tutorial. I have just made a version of this as a birthday present for one of my nieces. 😉

  5. Alyssa says:

Thanks for the great Tutorial and pattern. I shared your pattern on my new blog along with a picture of the one I made.

  6. So cheerful, and the pockets are an extra special touch! My daughter loves pockets. Would probably look cute with some rickrack trim, too! Pinning. 🙂

  7. Tiffany says:

What size do you cut the waist band? I couldn’t find that in the directions.

    • kelle says:

Hi Tiffany! Thank you! The waistband measurements are listed in the tutorial under the cutting instructions for the strap fabric. You would cut 2 – 2.5″ x 16.5″ strips for the waistband.

  8. Sarah says:

Hi, I am confused about the straps, it appears in the picture that there is a set of straps that tie around the neck and a set of straps that tie behind the back. But in the tutorial it seems the same straps are somehow connected from the neck to the back, perhaps crisscrossed behind the back. Can you explain how the straps are supposed to work? Thanks! My kids are excited about trying this pattern

    • kelle says:

Hi Sarah, Great question! The straps aren’t connected in the back. It’s just the neck straps that tie around the neck and the waist straps the tie around the back. I hope that helps! Kelle

what size does this make, I need to size it for an 8-10

  11. Arunsri says:

how much fabric do I need?

    • kelle says:

Hi! You’ll need: 1/2 yard fabric (apron skirt & pockets) / Fat quarter fabric (apron bib & pockets) /1/4 yard fabric (straps & waistband)

      Thanks!

      Kelle

  12. Laurie says:

the bib piece is cut into an8 1/2 by 7 inch rectangle. which is the length and witch is the width please?

    • kelle says:

Hi Laurie! I checked with Amanda and the 8.5″ is the width and the 7″ is the length for the apron bib. I hope this helps!

  13. Marsha says:

So cute! I adjusted it slightly, made the bib into a princess neckline, and made two – a Cinderella (dark blue apron/light blue ties and two half circles), and a Snow White, (blue bib, red ties, yellow skirt) aprons. Next up will be Rapunzel, Sophia, and Aurora princess. Can you tell the grand-daughters love the Disney Princesses?

One thing I found was that your cutting directions state to cut a 81/2″ x 7″ rectangle from the bib fabric. The directions show two so it would be lined, however the cutting only states one. ” Out of apron bib fabric 8 1/2″ x 7” rectangle
    2 pocket pieces”

Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial Ann. Despite many years of sewing I have not advanced much past complete beginner but I couldn’t be more pleased with the result I achieved following your excellent instructions. I am delighted! Many, many, many thanks. Best wishes

Thank you so much for this delightful pattern! You instructions were very good.

  18. Sandy says:

Love this pattern. I’m prewashing my fabric right now & getting started soon. While reading over directions, I noticed that the Make the Apron Bib on pgs 5-6 shows sewing the 2 bib pieces right sides together, but the straps are sticking out incorrectly in the pic on pg 6. They should be going the other way between the right side of the fabrics (as shown in the pic on page 5)… so they will be correct when the fabric is turned right side out. Experienced sewers would realize this, but thought I’d post it for others that might not catch it. My 2 1/2 year old granddaughter will love wearing this while cooking with her mom or playing with her own toy kitchen. I’m planning on making a matching Chef’s Hat that I also found on Pinterest. Thanks for taking the time to share this with us.

    • kelle says:

Hi Sandy! Thank you so much for your comment. The straps in the picture on page are shown correctly. (As they would be after sewn). On page 5, the pictures show how to insert the straps before sewing right sides together so that when you turn them right side out they come out of the top. I hope that helps. A matching Chef’s Hat is going to be so, so cute!

  19. Summer says:

thos is a super cute pattern! However I was confused on the straps. I only see dimensions for cutting one set of straps(to go around the waist). I can figure out the length of what the others should be (to go around the neck), but just thought I would let you know 😉

    • kelle says:

Hi Summer! The strap dimensions for both the neck and waistband are listed on the bottom of page 2 of the tutorial, with the directions for sewing the straps (around neck) on page 4 and the straps (for waist) on page 8. Thanks!

Although I’ve been around seamstresses all my life I still haven’t picked up sewing 😐. How much fabric would I need for a 2t?

    • kelle says:

It’s never too late to learn! This apron pattern will fit children age 4-9. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help!

  27. Patti says:

I just discovered this apron tutorial and I LOVE this little apron! It’s so so cute, and the tutorial is well written and easy to follow and understand. I have been sewing for over 50 years and have sewn everything from dinner napkins to 3 pc Western suits for my husband and little boys. I usually don’t use a pattern for aprons but I wanted to brag on this tutorial and all the photos you included that make this easy for sewers on all levels, from beginners to advanced. Thank you!

  28. Amanda says:

I’m slightly confused. The directions say to cut an 8.5×7 in recrangle for the bib. From reading the directions, it seems that I need 2 rectangles. Is that correct or am I missing something? Thanks!!

    • kelle says:

Hi Amanda, Just rechecked with Veronica (who revised the pattern). There should be 2 – 8.5″ X 7″ rectangles cut for the bib. . . one for the front and one for the lining. Thanks! Kelle
